Confirmation Day in our Parish

We remember the boys and girls who will receive the Sacramant of Confirmation and all those who helped them to prepare for this day.

We pray for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit:

“All powerful God, Father

of our Lord Jesus Christ,

by water and the Holy Spirit

you freed your sons and daughters

from sin and gave them new life.

Send your Holy Spirit upon them

to be their helper and guide.

Give them the spirit of wisdom

and understanding.

The spirit of right judgement and courage,

the spirit of knowledge and reverence.

Fill them with the spirit of wonder

and awe in your presence.

We ask this through Christ our Lord”

(From the Rite of Confirmation)

‘The Woman at the Well’

Any storyteller would wish to have been the author of this story; it is one of the best-loved passages in the New Testament. The way in which the woman is led from incomprehension to drawing awareness at a deeper level is splendid. The setting and the imagery (well and water) hold the story together and lead the reader, along with the Samaritan woman, to that deeper level.

The image in the second part is bread. These two images then – bread and water – hold the entire scene together. Bread and water are simple realities in themselves, but how essential! Hunger and thirst are able to command our full attention.  Every reader of the story soon realises that Jesus is speaking of a deeper hunger and thirst. The emptiness of the heart is an even more painful condition than physical hunger.

St. Patrick’s Day – Monday 17th March

St. Patrick’s mission was not immediately greatly successful but eventually he would make a tremendous number of converts. Two writings survive: the letter to Coroticus, a protest to the soldiers of a British prince who had killed some converts and sold others as slaves, and his Confession, written near the end of his life, showing him as one living by the faith he preached and allowing Christ to direct his whole life. He died in 491, though again other dates have been suggested, 480 or as early as 461.

A Reflection for Lent

“In imitation of our Master, we Christians are called to confront the poverty of our brothers and sisters, to touch it, to make it our own and to take practical steps to alleviate it. Destitution is not the same as poverty: destitution is poverty without faith, without support, without hope. There are three types of destitution: material, moral and spiritual.  Material destitution is what is normally called poverty, and affects those living in conditions opposed to human dignity: those who lack basic rights and needs such as food, water, hygiene, work and the opportunity to develop and grow culturally.

In response to this destitution, the Church offers her help, her diakonia, in meeting these needs and binding these wounds which disfigure the face of humanity. In the poor and outcast we see Christ’s face; by loving and helping the poor, we love and serve Christ. Our efforts are also directed to ending violations of human dignity, discrimination and abuse in the world, for these are so often the cause of destitution. When power, luxury and money become idols, they take priority over the need for a fair distribution of wealth. Our consciences thus need to be converted to justice, equality, simplicity and sharing”.              (Pope Francis: Message for Lent 2014)
