Day for Life 2016
This Sunday, 2nd October is Day for Life. We pray: “All powerful God you are present in the whole universe and in the smallest of your creatures. You embrace with your tenderness all that exists. Pour out upon us the power of your love, that we may protect life and beauty. Fill us with peace that we may live as brothers and sisters, harming no one” (Pope Francis: Laudato Sí)    (www.dayforlife.org)

October – Mission Month
Theme for Mission Sunday, 23rd October ‘Every Christian is a missionary’
‘Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord’ Masses sometimes end with those words. They are meant for every Christian because every baptised person is sent tobe good news for others and bring good news wherever he or she goes.

This year because we are celebrating the Year of Mercy there is a particular emphasis on being a missionary of mercy. Pope Francis says: ‘We need Christians who make God’s mercy and tenderness visible to people today’.

We can all, in some way, practise the Corporal Works of Mercy: Feed the hungry; Give drink to the thirsty; Clothe the naked; Harbour the homeless; Visit the sick, Visit the imprisoned; Bury the dead.

We can also do something to practise the Spiritual Works of Mercy: Instruct the ignorant; Counsel the doubtful; Admonish the sinner; Bear wrongs patiently; Forgive offences willingly; Comfort the afflicted; Pray for the living and the dead.

The Apostolate of Eucharistic Adoration
The presence recently of the Sisters of Mary Morning Star in St. Oliver’s Parish was a reminder to us of the importance of Eucharistic Adoration. The Sisters express their particular charismthrough that apostolate as well as in other ways. Bishop Cullinan isalso prioritising Eucharistic Adoraton in his vision for the Diocese.

Last Saturday a number of people who regularly attend Adoration in this and other parishes went to Hotel Minella and had input from members of the National Committee for the Apostolate of Eucharistic Adoration.

This is being followed up by a Training Course at Glencomeragh for people who would be prepared to be involved in the promotion of Eucharistic Adoration in the Diocese. This course will run on Saturday mornings from 10.00 a.m. to 12.50 p.m. beginning on Saturday 1st October and finishing on Saturday 26th November.

Eucharistic Adoration is essentially spending time before the Blessed Sacrament exposed in a Monstrance. A number of people come along each hour that the Blessed Sacramant is exposed and pray silently or sometimes read from the Bible or from some other source of spiritual nourishment. Others like to pray and meditate on the mysteries of the Rosary. Each person has his/her own way of being at prayer.

Spending time in Eucharistic Adoration and inviting others to do so will bring great blessings on our families, on our parishes, and on our Diocese. The Apostolate of Eucharistic Adoration is promoted especially by members of the lay faithful and can be engaged in by people of all ages.

Growing in Love
St. John in his First Letter says: ‘God is Love’ (1 Jn 4:8). The whole effort of our Christian living is to grow in love of God and in love of people.

The new religious education programme for Primary Schools is aptly called GROW IN LOVE. It was introduced last year for Junior and Senior Infants and, this September, it has been introduced for First and Second Classes. Here in St. Oliver’s Parish Centre last Monday we were happy to host an in-service training session for around sixty teachers. The commitment and enthusiasm of our teachers is inspiring, and as parish and parents, we will do our best to collaborate in the programme. Parents, the first educators of their children, have a vital role. They themselves will learn much from the new programme.

It will be very important to accompany children to weekly Masses in the various Parishes. Here in St. Oliver’s we have started the Monthly ’Family Mass’ on the First Sunday of each month. Parents and children of all ages are invited to get involved. We need a few more volunteers to help organise these Masses.

Our Bishop is making outreach to young people one of the priorities of his pastoral ministry. In this context he is inviting young peopleof the age group 18 – 25 to take part in a Retreat at Glencomeragh from October 7th (9.00 p.m.) to October 9th (3.00 p.m.) This is a free Retreat but donations are welcome.

We can all help by spreading the good news about the ‘Grow in Love’ programme and about the happenings for our young people. Our young people are the future of the Church.

Blessing based on The Universal Prayer for Grandparents
composed by Pope Benedict XV1—2008

Lord Jesus,
you were born of the Virgin Mary,
the daughter of Saints Joachim and Anne.
Look with love on all the grandparents who are
gathered here this evening/morning.
We ask you to send your blessings upon them,
for they are a source of strength
for their families, for the Church and for all of society.
Support them! As they grow older,
may they continue to be for their families
strong pillars of Gospel faith,
guardians of noble family values,
and living treasuries of sound religious traditions.
Enable them to be teachers of wisdom and courage,
that they may pass on to their grandchildren
the ability to hear God’s voice speaking in their hearts.

Lord Jesus,
help all families and all members of our society
value the presence and role of grandparents.
May they never be ignored or excluded,
but always encounter respect and love.
Help them to live serenely and to feel welcomed
all the years of their life.
We pray this in the name of the Father and the Son
and the Holy Spirit. Amen!
On the occasion of Irish National Grandparents Pilgrimage to Knock, this Sunday 11th September 2016
