Called to be Holy

Holiness is wholeness. The follower of Jesus must strive for a harmonious wholeness of body, mind, soul, and emotions, a wholeness that rules out vengeance, anger, and lack of charity.

Indeed the Christian must always bear in his heart these words of Jesus, “You must be made perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect”. To some these words may seem perplexing, and one may ask, “How can I be perfect when only God is that good”?

But Matthew is not speaking about absolute perfection, for only God is perfect in that sense. Rather the evangelist is stressing the necessity of the wholeness that is holiness.

Alone of the world’s religions, Christianity makes the demand that practitioners love their enemies. Some religions and philosophies oppose violence and advocate nonresistance; others urge acceptance of whatever abuse enemies inflict. Only Christianity demands love toward those who do us harm.                                                                                                                (P.J.
