Eucharistic Adoration
Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is a form of Eucharistic cult which is particularly widespread in the Church and earnestly recommended to her Pastors and faithful. Its initial form derives from Holy Thursday and the altar of repose, following the celebration of the Coena Domini Mass. This adoration is a most apt way of expressing the connection between the celebration of the memorial of the Lord’s Sacrifice and his continued presence in the Sacrament of the Altar. The reservation of the Sacred Species, so as to be able to administer Viaticum to the sick at any time, encouraged the practice among the faithful of recollection before the tabernacle and to worship Christ present in the Sacrament.

Indeed, this worship of adoration has a sound and firm foundation, especially since faith in the Lord’s real presence has as its natural consequence the outward and public manifestation of that belief. Therefore, the devotion prompting the faithful to visit the Blessed Sacramant draws them into an ever-deeper share in the paschal mystery and leads them to respond gratefully to the gift of him who through his humanity constantly pours divine life into the members of his Body. Abiding with Christ the Lord, they enjoy his intimate friendship and pour out their hearts before him for themselves and for those dear to them and they pray for the peace and salvation of the world. Offering their entire lives with Christ to the Father in the Holy Spirit, they derive from this sublime colloquy an increase of faith, hope and charity. Thus they foster those right dispositions that enable them with due devotion to celebrate the memorial of the Lord and receive frequently the bread given us by the Father.                    Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy

The Pope’s Intentions for August

Universal: Sports That sports may be an opportunity for friendly encounters between peoples and may contribute to peace in the world.

Evangelisation: Living the Gospel That Christians may live the Gospel, giving witness to faith, honesty, and love of neighbour.

To Save Us
God our Father,
who send your Son Jesus Christ into the world
not to judge it but to save it,
listen to our prayer:

By giving us your Son, you offer each of us
your light for our darkness,
your joy for our sadness,
your bread to nourish our life,
and your life to overcome our death.

Open our hearts to your word and your grace
so that we may recognise
in you our Father, who calls us by our name,
in your Son, our Saviour and brother,
and in your Spirit, the love which unites us.

And while our lips sing your praise,
bring our hearts close to you,
through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

The First-Born of Many Brothers
Lord Jesus, you came among us
the first-born of many brothers.

You have walked upon our earth,
you have eaten our bread,
your eyes have seen our light,
your smile has lit up our faces,
and our tears have dampened your eyes.
We pray to you:

Because you became like us
in all things except sin,
make us like you in grace.

Send us your Holy Spirit
that he may fashion us for eternity.
May your Father recognise your voice in our prayer.
May he say to each one of us:
“This is my Son, my beloved:
My favor rests on him!”

Listen to us, Lord:
we are your Church,
we are your Body, and flesh of your flesh.
You are our God and our brother,
forever and ever. Amen!    (Lucien Deiss, Biblical Prayers)

Visitors

Bishop Cullinan has asked our Parish to give hospitality to a group of three religious Sisters from around 17th August to 5th September 2016.

The Sisters are from a recently founded Community and are called the Stella Matutina Sisters (Our Lady the Morning Star).

They are coming here to pray and discern and may wish to invite people in the Parish to praywith them.

They will live in the Parish residence and we willask them to introduce themselves at the Sunday Masses.

The Needs of the Diocese

Bishop Cullinan has written this week to remind us of the Needs of the Diocese.

Many existing services like Family Ministry, Cura (which offers crisis pregnancy counselling and post-abortion counselling) have to be maintained and developed.  New services like the development of Glencomeragh (mentioned in last weeks Newsletter) will require funding.

Here in St. Oliver’s Parish, people who take the box of weekly envelopes will have already made their contribution.  People who do not have the box of envelopes can use the other envelopes provided near the Church entrances.  There is no need to put a name and address on the envelopes.

The Bishop expresses his thanks for the on-going generosity of the people of the diocese. He is also aware that people coming to Church are often confronted by other groups who have a Garda Siochana permit to collect near Churches. There are many deserving causes but, if not known, collectors should be asked to show a permit.

The Pope’s Intentions for July

Universal: Indigenous Peoples That indigenous peoples, whose identity and very existence are threatened, will be shown due respect.

Evangelisation: Latin America and the Caribbean That the Church in Latin America and the Caribbean, by means of her mission to the continent, may announce the Gospel with renewed vigour and enthusiasm.

A New Departure
Some people in our parish are familiar with Glencomeragh, Kilsheelan where the Institute of Charity (Rosminians) has had a Retreat House for many years.

Bishop Cullinan has announced recently that Glencomeragh has now been given to the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore and a new work will start there in September.

The house will now be designated as a ‘House of Mission’ and will be a place of evangelisation and preparation for young people. A number of trained people will take up residence at Glencomeragh and it is hoped that the young people who receive preparation there will go to the schools and parishes of the diocese to encounter other young people.

Glencomeragh will continue to be a ‘House of Prayer’ where people are invited to visit and enjoy some quiet time in the church and in the grounds and gardens.

Let us pray for the success of this new initiative, invoking the patron saints of the Diocese: Saint Otteran, Saint Carthage and Saint Declan and the Founder of the Insititute of Charity, Blessed Antonio Rosmini.

World Meeting of Families Prayer

God and Father of us all
in Jesus, your Son and our Savior,
you have made us
your sons and daughters
in the family of the Church.

May your grace and love
help our families
in every part of the world
be united to one another
in fidelity to the Gospel.

May the example of the Holy Family,
with the aid of your Holy Spirit,
guide all families, especially those most troubled,
to be homes of communion and prayer
and to always seek your truth and live in your love.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph pray for us!
