Elation Ministries Praise and Worship Concert will take place at Knock Basilica on Saturday 26th September at 8.30 p.m. Free admission. “Young people committed to spreading the good news through music and song”.

 

The Annual Legion of Mary Pilgrimage to Knock Shrine will take place on Sunday 27th September coinciding with the Eucharistic Congress. Cost €20. (Meals extra) For details contact any Legion of Mary member or Tel 087-7148100 or 086-3100581.

Conference on Laudato Si  There will be a conference on local responses to Laudato Si, Pope Francis’ Encyclical on Care for our Common Home on Saturday 3rd October in Waterford Institute of Technology. Registration at 9.00 a.m. All are welcome.
The primary aim of the conference is to raise awareness of the content of the Encyclical and to explore how we are responding locally to the challenge of environmental degradation and the danger posed by climate change.

 

Reflection and Formation for Ministers of the Eucharist and Readers  This will take place in St. Oliver’s Parish Centre on Tuesday 6th October for Readers and on Tuesday 13th October for Ministers of the Eucharist each evening at 7.30 p.m.
We need more Readers and more Ministers of the Eucharist and this is an ideal opportunity to prepare and to be refreshed.

 

Children’s Choir The Parish Pastoral Council has been reflecting on the need to establish a Children’s Choir in the Parish. In the past there was such a choir, and there may be people who were members who would now be  prepared to help to form a new choir. Education in the Faith

Last weeks Parish Newsletter highlighted the New Catholic Preschool and Primary Religious Curriculum.   But Education in the faith is also the task of Parents and should begin in the child’s earliest years.

The CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH (CCC) says that this “already happens when family members help one another to grow in faith by the witness of a christian life in keeping with the Gospel.  Family catechesis precedes, accompanies and enriches other forms of instruction in the faith.
Parents have the mission of teaching their children to pray and to discover their vocation as children of God” (CCC 2226). Many parents feel that they need more knowledge of their faith.

Accord Pre Marriage Courses for 2015 will be held in Clonmel on:  September 27th & October 4th November 8th & 15th from 9.00 a.m. – 2.00 p.m. All courses are being held in Hotel Minella. All couples must attend both Sundays. The cost of the course is €150 per couple. All materials – tea/coffee refreshments are included.

 

The Jubilee Year of Mercy will run from December 8th 2015 to November 20th 2016. Pope Francis has given all priests the faculty to absolve the sin of abortion during the Jubilee Year.

What is the National Eucharistic Congress?
The National Eucharistic Congress will serve both as a spiritual preparation for the fifty-first International Eucharistic Congress 2016 in Cebu next January, and as an opportunity to focus, in the light of our Eucharistic communion, on some of the important pastoral questions in the life of the Church at the present time.

The theme for the National Congress, echoing the theme of IEC2016, is ‘Christ, our Hope’ (Col 1:27). The Congress, which is free of charge, will have a particular focus on marriage and the family as well as the Year of Consecrated Life 2015 and the upcoming Jubilee of Mercy.

New Catholic Preschool and Primary Religious Education Curriculum

The New Catholic Preschool and Primary Religious Education Curriculum was launched in this Diocese last Thursday. The Catholic vision of education is rooted in its ‘Christian concept of life centred on Jesus Christ; he is the One who ennobles people, gives meaning to human life, and is the model which the Catholic School offers to its pupils’ (CS 33-37). The Catholic Faith is a body of truth that is to be faithfully handed on through Religious Education and catechesis and this handing on is the Christian mission and duty of parents, clergy, religious, teachers and catechists (cf. LF 40, par1).

Religious education is never simply one subject among many in the Catholic primary school, but the foundation of the entire education process. Catholic primary Religious Education is distinctive because it seeks to encourage and support the Catholic faith commitment of  Catholic students (SGN 39). The National Directory for Catechesis, Share the Good News (2010), outlines principles for Religious Education in the Irish Catholic Church (SGN chapter 2).

The Religious Education curriculum conforms with the Catechism of the Catholic Church and is in accordance with the vision outlined in ‘Share the Good News’, the National Directory for Catechesis in Ireland. The practical application of the curriculum, in the day to day teaching in the classroom, will be implemented through the ‘Grow in Love’ Religious Education Programme.

Last Tuesday 1st September was the First World Day of Prayer for Creation. We need to pray always and be reinforced in our commitment to pray for the world we live in.

Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) There will be a meeting of the PPC on Monday evening 31st August 8.00 p.m. in the Parish Centre. Anybody interested in becoming a member is very welcome to come to the meeting.

 

World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation Starting this Tuesday, the Day of Prayer will be held annually on September 1st. We pray that we will be able to live out our vocation to be stewards of creation.

 

First Friday Next Friday is the First Friday of the month. Sr. Mary and Fr. Hegarty will bring Holy Communion to the persons who have asked to receive it in their own homes.
If there are other persons who would like to receive Communion at home on the First Friday (or at any other convenient day), please inform us and we will call to you and make arrangements.

 

St. Vincent de Paul Monthly Collection will take place after all Masses next weekend Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th September.

Sunday
On Sunday, our participation in the Eucharist has special importance. Sunday, like the Jewish Sabbath, is meant to be a day which heals our relationships with God, with ourselves, with others and with the world. Sunday is the day of the Resurrection, the ‘first day’ of the new creation, whose first fruits are the Lord’s risen humanity, the pledge of the final transfiguration of all created reality. It also proclaims ‘man’s eternal rest in God’.  In this way, Christian spirituality incorporates the value of relaxation and festivity.

We tend to demean contemplative rest as something unproductive and unnecessary, but this is to do away with the very thing which is most important about work: its meaning. We are called to include in our work a dimension of receptivity and gratuity, which is quite different from mere inactivity. Rather, it is another way of working, which forms part of our very essence. It protects human action from becoming empty activism; it also prevents that unfettered greed and sense of isolation which make us seek personal gain to the detriment of all else.

The law of weekly rest forbade work on the seventh day, ‘so that your ox and your donkey may have rest, and the son of your maidservant, and the stranger, may be refreshed’ (Ex 23:12).   Rest opens our eyes to the larger picture and gives us renewed sensitivity to the rights of others. And so the day of rest, centred on the Eucharist, sheds it light on the whole week, and
motivates us to greater concern for nature and the poor.

There will be no Adoration on Bank Holiday Monday 3rd August.

 

Saint Pio Prayer Group will take place on Monday 3rd August in St. Mary’s Church, Irishtown, Clommel. Rosary and prayers at 6.30 p.m. Mass at 7.00 p.m. for petitions placed in the basket on the altar.  All are welcome.

 

First Friday Next Friday is the First Friday of the month. Sr. Mary and Fr. Hegarty will bring Holy Communion to the persons who have asked to receive it in their own homes.
If there are other persons who would like to receive Communion at home on the First Friday (or at any other convenient day), please inform us and we will call to you and make arrangements.

Launch of Laudato Si, ‘Care for our Common Home’ will take place on Tuesday 28th July at 7.30 p.m. in The Tower Hotel, Waterford. Fr. Sean McDonagh, a leading environmental theologian who was involved in the drafting of Laudato Si, will introduce the Encyclical and will discuss its implications for us locally. We hope as many as possible will come to hear Sean, whose life and work has been dedicated to raising awareness of the threat of climate change and environmental destruction.

The Bishop has sent us some copies of the Encyclical. These are available in the Sacristy at €4 (Four Euro) per copy.

 

St. Vincent de Paul Monthly Collection will take place after all Masses next weekend Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd August.

 

The Catholic Grandparents Association would like to invite all  grandparents, parents and grandchildren to celebrate this wonderful  memorial day for St. Joachim and St. Anne on Sunday 26th July, and  we will be delighted to welcome you all to the National Grandparents  Pilgrimage at Our Lady of Knock Shrine, on Sunday 13th September.

Irish Blood Transfusion Service would like to thank 484 Donors who  attended their Blood Donor Clinic in Clonmel recently. Donors, together with the families, friends and neighbours that support them, make up a  community that brings life and hope to hospital patients every day.

 

Visiting the Sick  Please let us know when you have somebody sick in Hospital (or at home). We will be glad to visit, and to pray for them.

Fundraising
Our annual FAMILY FUN WALK brought in €5,968.10. The CLONMEL VINTAGE AND CLASSIC CAR CLUB gave us a donation of €5,500.00.

Great credit and THANKS are due to all those who organised and participated in these events.

With these and other donations we have now reached €122,268.28 towards our target of €130,000.00.

 

National Eucharistic Congress 2015

This Sunday and for the next four Sundays, the Gospel readings will be from the 6th Chapter of St. John’s Gospel which is about the “Bread of Life”, the Holy Eucharist. These reading will help us to prepare for the National Eucharistic Congress which will take place at Knock on September 26th and 27th. The theme of the Congress is: “Christ Our Hope” (Col 1:27).

It would be great if we could have a couple of volunteers to promote the Eucharistic Congress in our Parish and to liaise with the Diocese and with the other Parishes in Clonmel. Perhaps a Pilgrimage to Knock can be organised for one of those days.

The Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) The members of the PPC meet monthly to reflect on our Parish. We try to discern the areas of greatest need and how we might be able to reach out to these. We need a few more people to help us in this service. The next meeting is in the Parish Centre at 8.00 p.m. on Monday 31st August.

1. ‘’LAUDATO SI’, mi’ Signore’ – ‘Praise be to you, my Lord’. In the words of this beautiful canticle, St. Francis of Assisi reminds us that our common home is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us. ‘Praise be to you, my Lord, through our Sister, Mother Earth, who sustains and governs us, and who produces various fruit with coloured flowers and herbs’.

2. This sister now cries out to us because of the harm we have inflicted on her by our irresponsible use and abuse of the goods with which God has endowed her. We have come to see ourselves as her lords and masters, entitled to plunder her at will. The violence present in our hearts, wounded by sin, is also reflected in the symptoms of sickness evident in the soil, in the water, in the air and in all forms of life. This is why the earth herself, burdened and laid waste, is among the most abandoned and maltreated of our poor; she ‘groans in travail’ (Rm 8:22). We have forgotten that we ourselves are dust of the earth (cf. Gn 2:7); our very bodies are made up of her elements, we breathe her air and we receive life and refreshment from her waters”.
