Message of Pope Francis for Lent (continued)

“Indifference to our neighbour and to God also represents a real temptation for us Christians. Each year during Lent we need to hear once more the voice of the prophets who cry out and trouble our conscience.

God is not indifferent to our world; he so loves it that he gave his Son for our salvation. In the Incarnation, in the earthly life, death, and resurrection of the Son of God, the gate between God and man, between heaven and earth, opens once for all.

The Church is like the hand holding open this gate, thanks to her proclamation of God’s word, her celebration of the sacraments and her witness of the faith which works through love (cf. Gal 5:6).

But the world tends to withdraw into itself and shut that door through which God comes into world and the world comes to him. Hence the hand, which is the Church, must never be surprised if it is rejected, crushed and wounded.

God’s people, then, need this interior renewal, lest we become indifferent and withdraw into ourselves.

Take the Short-Term pledge and make a difference to someone’s life! For more information visit www.pioneerassociation.ie

Lent starts this Wedneday 18th February – Ash Wednesday

Extract from the Message of his Holiness Pope Francis for Lent 2015 “Make your hearts firm” (Jas 5:8)

“Lent is a time of renewal for the whole Church, for each community and every believer. Above all it is a “time of grace” (2 Cor 6:2). God does not ask of us anything that he himself has not first given us. “We love because he first has loved us” (1 Jn 4:19). He is not aloof from us. Each one of us has a place in his heart. He knows us by name, he cares for us and he seeks us out whenever we turn away from him. He is interested in each of us; his love does not allow him to be indifferent to what happens to us.

Usually, when we are healthy and comfortable, we forget about others (something God the Father never does): we are unconcerned with their problems, their sufferings and the injustices they endure… Our heart grows cold. As long as I am relatively healthy and comfortable, I don’t think about those less well off. Today, this selfish attitude of indifference has taken on global proportions, to the extent that we can speak of a globalization of indifference. It is a problem which we, as Christians, need to confront.

When the people of God are converted to his love, they find answers to the questions that history continually raises. One of the most urgent challenges which I would like to address in this Message is precisely the globalization of indifference”.

The Pope’s Intentions for February

Universal: Prisoners  That prisoners, especially the young, may be able to rebuild lives of dignity.

For Evangelisation: Separated Spouses  That married people who are separated may find welcome and support in the Christian community.

First International Day of Prayer against Human Trafficking

We are invited to say this prayer

“O God, when we hear of children and adults deceived and taken to unknown places for purposes of sexual exploitation, forced labour, and organ ‘harvesting’, our hearts are saddened and our spirits angry that their dignity and rights are ignored through threats, lies and force.

We cry out against the evil practice of this modern slavery, and pray with St. Bakhita for it to end.  Give us wisdom and courage to reach out and stand with those whose bodies, hearts and spirits have been so wounded, so that together we may make real your promises to fill these sisters and brothers with a love that is tender and good.

Send the exploiters away empty-handed to be converted from their wickedness, and help us all to claim the freedom that is your gift to your children. Amen”.

World Day of Prayer – 8th February 2015

Reflection and Action on the Slave Trade. We invoke the intercession of St. Josephine Bakhita for all those enslaved or trafficked.

St. Josephine Bakhita  Born in 1869 in the region of Darfur in southern Sudan, Josephine – the name given to her at her baptism – says of her early years, ‘I lived a very happy and carefree life, without knowing suffering’. But things changed when around eight or nine years old she was kidnapped by Arab slave traders. Over the next twelve years she was sold several times as a slave.

Traumatised and abused, she even forgot her name, taking the name bakhita, Arabic for ‘fortunate’ or ’lucky’. At one time she said, ’No day passed without some wound or other, including from whipping and the multilations of tattooing and marks on her body.

In 1885 the Italian consul bought her, treated her well, brought her to Italy, eventually ending up in the custody of the Canossian sisters in Venice. She became a Christian, receiving the sacraments of initiation on 9 January 1890, taking the names Josephine Margaret. At the end of 1893 she entered the Canossian sisters and after her peofession went to their convent in Schio in the province of Vicenza, where she spent the rest of her life.

She often told the story of her early experience as a slave, was renowned for her care of the townspeople and her encouragement of sisters to work in Africa. She died on 8 February 1947. Beatified in 1992 and canonised as saint in 2000, her feast is 8 February, though not celebrated this year as it is the Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Loving God,

Bless all our grandparents,

those with us here today,

those who cannot be with us

and those who have gone to be with you.

May they heed your call to share their wisdom

and faith with us.

May they have courage and confidence

to hand on your gifts

of experience and knowledge

of stories, songs and memories.

May they continue to learn

and grow with us day by day.

Bless them and all of us gathered here today

with length of days and joy at the last.

We make this prayer

Through Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Loving God, as we gather today we thank you for your presence with us. Help us in our school community to be grateful for all the ways in which we are blessed in our teaching and our learning. St. Oliver’s Parish Pastoral Council (PPC)  A good number of parishioners, male and female have, over the years, served on the Pastoral Council (previously called the Parish Council). The PPC has recently welcomed three new members. Current members of the PPC are: Michael Carroll, Elaine Downey, Gidolf Lazarus, Mandy Dalton, Meta Cunningham and Michael Hegarty P.P. Any of these members may be contacted through the Parish Office.

The PPC normally meets on the first Monday of each month (except in August) and, in an atmosphere of prayer and reflection, tries to discern the real needs of the Parish and search for ways to meet these needs. The PPC is always open to suggestions from the parish community and from people who have made St. Oliver’s Church their normal place to worship.

World Day of Emigrants and Refugees   –   18th January 2015

“Jesus Christ is always waiting to be recognised in migrants and refugees, in displaced persons and in exiles and through them he calls us to share our resources and occasionally to give up something of our acquired riches” (Pope Francis)

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity  –  18th to 25th January 2015

The theme this year is from Jesus encounter with the Samaritan Woman at the well “Jesus said to her ‘Give me to drink’ (John 4:7)”

The encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan Woman invites us to try water from a different well and also to offer a little of our own. In diversity, we enrich each other.  The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is a privileged moment of prayer, encounter and dialogue. It is an opportunity to recognise the richness and value that are present in the other, the different, and to ask God for the gift of unity.

Catholic Schools Week  –  25th to 31st January 2015

The theme is “Catholic Schools: Called to Serve”

Service is in Love, Kindness, Joy, Truth, Justice

Feast of the Baptism of the Lord

As we celebrate this great feast we recall our own Baptism.

It is in Baptism that we die and rise with Christ.  It is in Baptism that we enter the Church, the Body of Christ.

It is in Baptism that we become children of God. It is in Baptism that we are anointed priest, prophetand King.

So as we come to the conclusion of the Christmas season, let us celebrate not only Jesus’ baptism, but our own. And let us continue to remember and celebrate our Baptism each day as we follow Jesus this new year.

Let us also recall our Baptism each time that we bless ourselves with holy water.

An Advent Prayer

Your Return is Near

“Yes, your return is near!

Oh, yes, come, Lord Jesus”!

Soon I am going to see you, O my God,

and I rejoice for that day.

Not for what I am,

not for what I have,

but just because I am nothing

and my hands are empty before you.

Because I depend on you, Lord,

and I rejoice for that great feastday

when my misery will meet

your mercy.

An Advent Prayer

How Long the Way!  Emmanuel, come, save your people.

How long the path which leads to you!

Lord, come to meet us,

be our way.

How heavy the burden of our misery!

Lord, come to meet us,

be our rest.

How darkly hard the journey to our star!

Lord, come to meet us,

be our sunlight.

How lonely do we wander,

stumbling together in the darkness!

Lord, come to meet us,

be our brother.

How long, Lord Jesus, do we wait for your return!

Yet since you lit hope’s flame within our hearts,

come now at last to be our hope’s fulfillment.

Allow us to dwell near your heart:

there we belong forever and ever.

(Lucien Deiss, Biblical Prayers)

A Prayer for Advent

O Wisdom – Come, O Lord, come, save your people!

O Wisdom,

issuing from the mouth of the Most High, announced by the prophets:

Come to teach us the way of salvation,

Come, O Lord, come, save your people!

O Lord,

shepherd of the house of Israel who guide your people:

Come to redeem us by the strength of your arm,

Come, O Lord, come, save your people!

O Son of David,

Standard of people and of kings, you whom the world implores:

Come to deliver us, Lord, do not delay,

Come, O Lord, come, save your people!

O Key of David,

and scepter of the house of Israel: you who open so no one can close,

you who close so no one can open:

Come to free those who wait in the darkness,

Come, O Lord, come, save your people!

O Rising Sun,

Splendor of eternal light and sun of justice: Come to give light

to those who are seated in the shadow of death,

Come, O Lord, come, save your people!

O King of nations,

expectation of peoples and cornerstone of the Church:

Come to deliver the man that you have created,

Come, O Lord, come, save your people!

O Emmanuel,

King and hope of nations and Saviour of all people:

Come to free us, Lord, do not delay,

Come, O Lord, come, save your people!
