A Prayer for November  –  Father, Source of all Joy

God our Father,

source of all joy in heaven as on earth,

prepare for all people, we pray,

the banquet of eternal joy.

Remove the mourning veil covering all peoples

and the shroud investing all nations.

Destroy death forever

in the resurrection of your Son Jesus.

Wipe away the tears from every cheek,

take away the shame of the people who love you.

Because you are God

for the happiness of all people,

you have not created death or invented tears

but you call all people, brothers and sisters of Jesus,

to share your life and joy forever.

(Lucien Deiss – Biblical Prayers)

 6 New Beatitudes for the Modern Era

 “Blessed are those who remain faithful while enduring evils inflicted on them by others, and forgive them from their heart;

 “Blessed are those who look into the eyes of the abandoned and marginalised, and show them their closeness;

Blessed are those who see God in every person, and strive to make others also discover him;

Blessed are those who protect and care for our common home;

Blessed are those who renounce their own comfort in order to help others;

Blessed are those who pray and work for full communion between Christians”.

World Mission Sunday in this Year of Mercy
Every Christian is a Missionary

Pope Francis in his message for Mission Sunday this year says:

“…All of us are invited to ‘go out’ as missionary disciples, each generously offering their talents, creativity, wisdom and experience in order to bring the message of God’s tenderness and compassion tothe entire human family. By virtue of the missionary mandate, the Church cares for those who do not know the Gospel, because she wants everyone to be saved and to experience God’s love.

(…) In many places evangelisation begins with education, to which missionary work dedicates much time and effort, like the merciful vine-dresser of the Gospel (cf. Lk 13:7-9; Jn 15:1), patiently waiting for fruit after years of slow cultivation.

(…) All peoples and cultures have the right to receive the message of salvation which is God’s gift to every person. This is all the more necessary when we consider how many injustices, wars, and humanitarian crises still need resolution.

(…)May Holy Mary, sublime icon of redeemed humanity, model of missionaries for the Church, teach all men, women and families, to foster and safeguard the living and mysterious presence of the Risen Lord in every place, he who renews personal relationships, cultures and peoples, and who fills all with joyful mercy”.

Sharing the Good News

We meet God, in the first place, in our family life. The family is sometimes referred to as the ‘domestic Church’. It is in this Church in our own homes that we have the first experience of being Christianand here we learn the beliefs and values that will inform our lives.

Here too we have our first experience of prayer. A father or mother that teaches their child to make the sign of the cross, or to bless themselves with holy water as a reminder of their baptism, is doing something that will stay with their child for his/her entire life.

Families must not wait for their child to go to school before introducing them to Jesus. At the child’s baptism, they committed themselves to being the first teachers of their child in the ways of faith.

Parents may sometimes feel inadequate for this role and may need support and encouragement. They get this from the prayer and encouragement of the parish community and from the childrens’ teachers when they go to school.

But the support and example of the wider family is also very important and grandparents have a very important role in passing on the faith. Parents and the wider family can learn much from taking an interest in what the children are learning in the catechetical programme in school.

For children in primary school, the new Grow in Love programme, already introduced to Junior Infants and to First and Second Classes is particularly helpful.

The Pope’s Intentions for October

Universal: Journalists That journalists, in carrying out their work, may always be motivated by respect for truth and a strong sense of ethics.

Evangelisation: World Mission Day That World Mission Day may renew within all Christian communities the joy of the Gospel and the responsibility to announce it.

Sharing Good News
Go out to the whole world; Proclaim the Good News. (Mark 16:15)
The month of October is a very appropriate time to reflect on the duty we have as Christians to proclaim and share the Good News of the Gospel.

Five years ago the new National Directory for Catechesis in Ireland was launched. It is called Share the Good News (SGN). Since then many initiatives have begun in various parts of the country.

The new programme for religious education in Primary Schools called Grow in Love will soon be familiar to parents who have children in Primary School as they are asked to be involved in what their children are learning about the faith.

We all need faith development or ‘evangelisation’.  Faith development is a life long process in which we deepen our appreciation of God’s wonderful love for us in Jesus Christ.  Jesus “calls us to live our lives inspired by his life, his truth, his way. We are never alone. Jesus brings us beyond ourselves into a whole new world of loving relationship with God, with our neighbour, with our community, with society and with all of creation (SGN,8).

Day for Life 2016
This Sunday, 2nd October is Day for Life. We pray: “All powerful God you are present in the whole universe and in the smallest of your creatures. You embrace with your tenderness all that exists. Pour out upon us the power of your love, that we may protect life and beauty. Fill us with peace that we may live as brothers and sisters, harming no one” (Pope Francis: Laudato Sí)    (www.dayforlife.org)

October – Mission Month
Theme for Mission Sunday, 23rd October ‘Every Christian is a missionary’
‘Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord’ Masses sometimes end with those words. They are meant for every Christian because every baptised person is sent tobe good news for others and bring good news wherever he or she goes.

This year because we are celebrating the Year of Mercy there is a particular emphasis on being a missionary of mercy. Pope Francis says: ‘We need Christians who make God’s mercy and tenderness visible to people today’.

We can all, in some way, practise the Corporal Works of Mercy: Feed the hungry; Give drink to the thirsty; Clothe the naked; Harbour the homeless; Visit the sick, Visit the imprisoned; Bury the dead.

We can also do something to practise the Spiritual Works of Mercy: Instruct the ignorant; Counsel the doubtful; Admonish the sinner; Bear wrongs patiently; Forgive offences willingly; Comfort the afflicted; Pray for the living and the dead.

The Apostolate of Eucharistic Adoration
The presence recently of the Sisters of Mary Morning Star in St. Oliver’s Parish was a reminder to us of the importance of Eucharistic Adoration. The Sisters express their particular charismthrough that apostolate as well as in other ways. Bishop Cullinan isalso prioritising Eucharistic Adoraton in his vision for the Diocese.

Last Saturday a number of people who regularly attend Adoration in this and other parishes went to Hotel Minella and had input from members of the National Committee for the Apostolate of Eucharistic Adoration.

This is being followed up by a Training Course at Glencomeragh for people who would be prepared to be involved in the promotion of Eucharistic Adoration in the Diocese. This course will run on Saturday mornings from 10.00 a.m. to 12.50 p.m. beginning on Saturday 1st October and finishing on Saturday 26th November.

Eucharistic Adoration is essentially spending time before the Blessed Sacrament exposed in a Monstrance. A number of people come along each hour that the Blessed Sacramant is exposed and pray silently or sometimes read from the Bible or from some other source of spiritual nourishment. Others like to pray and meditate on the mysteries of the Rosary. Each person has his/her own way of being at prayer.

Spending time in Eucharistic Adoration and inviting others to do so will bring great blessings on our families, on our parishes, and on our Diocese. The Apostolate of Eucharistic Adoration is promoted especially by members of the lay faithful and can be engaged in by people of all ages.

Growing in Love
St. John in his First Letter says: ‘God is Love’ (1 Jn 4:8). The whole effort of our Christian living is to grow in love of God and in love of people.

The new religious education programme for Primary Schools is aptly called GROW IN LOVE. It was introduced last year for Junior and Senior Infants and, this September, it has been introduced for First and Second Classes. Here in St. Oliver’s Parish Centre last Monday we were happy to host an in-service training session for around sixty teachers. The commitment and enthusiasm of our teachers is inspiring, and as parish and parents, we will do our best to collaborate in the programme. Parents, the first educators of their children, have a vital role. They themselves will learn much from the new programme.

It will be very important to accompany children to weekly Masses in the various Parishes. Here in St. Oliver’s we have started the Monthly ’Family Mass’ on the First Sunday of each month. Parents and children of all ages are invited to get involved. We need a few more volunteers to help organise these Masses.

Our Bishop is making outreach to young people one of the priorities of his pastoral ministry. In this context he is inviting young peopleof the age group 18 – 25 to take part in a Retreat at Glencomeragh from October 7th (9.00 p.m.) to October 9th (3.00 p.m.) This is a free Retreat but donations are welcome.

We can all help by spreading the good news about the ‘Grow in Love’ programme and about the happenings for our young people. Our young people are the future of the Church.

Blessing based on The Universal Prayer for Grandparents
composed by Pope Benedict XV1—2008

Lord Jesus,
you were born of the Virgin Mary,
the daughter of Saints Joachim and Anne.
Look with love on all the grandparents who are
gathered here this evening/morning.
We ask you to send your blessings upon them,
for they are a source of strength
for their families, for the Church and for all of society.
Support them! As they grow older,
may they continue to be for their families
strong pillars of Gospel faith,
guardians of noble family values,
and living treasuries of sound religious traditions.
Enable them to be teachers of wisdom and courage,
that they may pass on to their grandchildren
the ability to hear God’s voice speaking in their hearts.

Lord Jesus,
help all families and all members of our society
value the presence and role of grandparents.
May they never be ignored or excluded,
but always encounter respect and love.
Help them to live serenely and to feel welcomed
all the years of their life.
We pray this in the name of the Father and the Son
and the Holy Spirit. Amen!
On the occasion of Irish National Grandparents Pilgrimage to Knock, this Sunday 11th September 2016
