The Holy Year of Mercy
“With our eyes fixed on Jesus and his merciful gaze, we experience the love of the Most Holy Trinity’. The mission Jesus received from the Father was that of revealing the mystery of divine love in its fullness. ‘God is love’ (1Jn 4:8,16), John affirms for the first and only time in all of Holy Scripture.

This love has now been made visible and tangible in Jesus’ entire life. His person is nothing but love, a love given gratuitously. The relationships he forms with the people who approach him manifest something entirely unique and unrepeatable. The signs he works, especially in favour of sinners, the poor, the marginalised, the sick, and the suffering, are all meant to teach mercy. Everything in him speaks of mercy.  Nothing in him is devoid of compassion”.         (Pope Francis, Misericoriae Vultus, n.8)

Among the Year of Mercy initiatives the following is suggested: Catholics are invited to take up again the ancient Christian custom of abstaining from meat each Friday in honour of our Saviours passion and death.

 

Prayer of St. Thomas Aquinas (1226-1274) after Holy Communion
I thank you, Lord, Almighty Father, everlasting God, for having been pleased, through no merit of mine, but of your great mercy alone, to feed me, a sinner, and your unworthy servant, with the precious Body and Blood of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.

I pray that this Holy Communion may not be for my judgement and condemnation, but for my pardon and salvation.

Let this Holy Communion be to me a armour of faith and a shield of good will, a cleansing of all vices, and a rooting out of all evil desires.

May it increase love and patience, humility and obedience, and all the virtues.

May it be a firm defence against the evil designs of all my visible and invisible enemies, a perfect quieting of all the desires of soul and body.

May this Holy Communion being about a perfect union with you, the one true God, and at last enable me to reach eternal bliss when you will call me.

I pray that you bring me, a sinner, to the indescribable feast where you, with your Son and the Holy Spirit, are to your saints true light, full blessedness, everlasting joy, and perfect happiness. Thanks  Many thanks to all who helped with the Celebration of Christmas in our Parish: those who got the Church ready, including the Crib, and the Christmas Tree with its decorations; the Choir and the Folk Group; those who distributed the Parish Envelopes; those who donated flowers and the persons that arranged the flowers; the children and teachers from St. Oliver’s School who participated at 12 Noon Mass on the Feast of the Epiphany.

 

Christmas Collection The Priests of the Parish are deeply grateful to those who contributed so generously to the Christmas Collection. This collection goes to the Diocese for the support of all the Priests.

The Baptism of the Lord  –  10th January 2016
Jesus is anointed with the Spirit and his power. He is proclaimed Messiah. He now goes about doing good, working the signs that make him known as the Servant of God. He is the one who brings good news to the poor and tells of salvation.

Through our Baptism each one of us is ordered to the life of Christ – Priest, Prophet and King – and the father looks on us with favour.

With this Feast we return to the weeks of what is called Ordinary Time. There will be new parts of the Bible read at weekday Masses, beginning with 1 Samuel.

The Epiphany of the Lord – Wednesday 6th January

The Holy Family – Sunday 27th December
The Holy Family is seen as the model for the human family, the religious community and the Church itself. The celebration of the Incarnation has brought us to see God’s closeness.

In the Holy Family we see the ordinariness of the life of Jesus, the simple acceptance by Mary and Joseph of the marvels of God.

In the daily life of family and community we can touch the divine, we can come close to God. But we have to learn to live centred on God, with respect and love for each other.

 

Friday 1st January 2016 – Solemnity of Mary, The Holy Mother of God and World Day of Peace

At the message of the angel, the Virgin Mary received the Word of God in her heart and in her body, and gave Life to the world. Hence she is acknowledged and honoured as being truly the Mother of God and Mother of the Redeemer (Lumen gentium, 52).

Holy Year of Mercy
It is proper to God to exercise mercy, and he manifests his omnipotence particularly in this way. Saint Thomas Aquinas’ words show that God’s mercy, rather than a sign of weakness, is the mark of his omnipotence. For this reason the liturgy, in one of its most ancient collects, has us pray: ‘O God, who reveal your power above all in your mercy and forgiveness…’ Throughout the historyof humanity, God will always be the One who is present, close, provident, holy and merciful.

‘Patient and merciful’. These words often go together in the Old Testament to describe God’s nature. His being merciful is concretely demonstrated in his many actions throughout the history of salvation where his goodness prevails over punishment and destruction. In a special way the Psalms bring to the fore the grandeur of his merciful action: ‘He forgives all your iniquity, he heals all your diseases, he redeems your life from the pit, he crowns you with steadfast love and mercy’ (Ps 103:3-4).   Another psalm, in an even more explicit way, attests to the concrete signs of his mercy: ‘He executes justice for the oppressed and he gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets the prisoners free; The Lord opens the eyes of the blind; The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; The Lord loves the righteous; The Lord watches over the sojourners; he upholds the widow and the fatherless; but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin (Ps 146:7-9)

Merciful Like the Father
Jesus Christ is THE FACE of the Father’s mercy. These words might well sum up the mystery of the Christian faith. Mercy has become living and visible in Jesus of Nazareth, reaching its culmination in him. The Father, ‘rich in mercy’ (Eph 2:4), after having revealed his name to Moses as ‘a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness’ (Ex 34:6), has never ceased to show, in various ways throughout history, his divine nature. In the ‘fullness of time’ (Gal 4:4), when everything has been arranged according to his plan of salvation, he sent his only Son into the world, born of the Virgin Mary, to reveal his love for us in a definitive way. Whoever sees Jesus sees the Father (cf. Jn 14:9). Jesus of Nazareth, by his words, his actions, and his entire person’ reveals the mercy of God.

We need constantly to contemplate the mystery of mercy. It is a wellspring of joy, serentiy, and peace. Our salvation depends on it. Mercy: the word reveals the very mystery of the Most Holy Trinity. Mercy: the ultimate and supreme act by which God comes to meet us. Mercy: the fundamental law that dwells in the heart of very person who looks sincerely into the eyes of his brothers and sisters on the path of life.  Mercy: the bridge that connects God and man, opening our hearts to the hope of being loved forever despite our sinfulness.  Pope Francis, Misericordiae Vultus, Nos 1 and 2

Our next Family Mass will be at 12.00 Noon on Sunday 3rd January 2016, and normally on the First Sunday of each month. Ideally, one or two families will take responsibility for the Readings, Prayers of the Faithful etc.

Christmas Penitential Services in Clonmel will take place in St. Mary’s Church, Irishtown on Saturday 19th December from 10.30 a.m. – 6.30 p.m. and in the Friary Church on Monday 21st December at 7.30 p.m.

 

Christmas Reflection will take place at St. John’s Pastoral Centre, Waterford on Monday 21st December from 7.30 p.m. – 8.30 p.m. Facilitators: Antoinette Dilworth rsj and Ann O Farrell. An opportunity to slow down our hurried pace of life to prepare our minds and hearts to receive the gift of Emmanuel.

2nd Sunday of Advent and Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The Jubilee (Holy) Year of Mercy begins on the 8th December. Pope Francis asks us to be involved:
“It is my burning desire that, during this Jubilee, the Christian people may reflect on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. It will be a way to reawaken our conscience, too often grown dull in the face of poverty. And let us enter more deeply into the heart of the Gospel where the poor have a special experience of God’s mercy.

Jesus introduces us to these works of mercy in his preaching so that we can know whether or not we are living as his disciples.  Let us rediscover these corporal works of mercy: to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, heal the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead.  And let us not forget the spiritual works of mercy: to counsel the doubtful, instruct the ignorant, admonish sinners, comfort the afflicted, forgive offences, bear patiently those who do us ill, and pray for the living and the dead”.

The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Mary said, ‘yes’ to God at that first moment, even though she was disturbed and confused by the message. She could not have known then where her yes would take her. It was a brave move, which would bring her both joy and heartbreak, but she knew it was right and she took that first step. We all have opportunities every day to say a heartfelt ‘yes’ to what God is calling us to do. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul will be making its annual fundraising appeal at all Masses this weekend Saturday 28th & Sunday 29th November.

St. Vincent de Paul Annual Christmas Collection will be held next Saturday 5th & Sunday 6th December after all the Masses.

 

Advent
Advent is a time of waiting, conversion and of hope:

– waiting-memory of the first, humble coming of the Lord in our mortal flesh; waiting-supplication for his final, glorious coming as Lord of History and Universal Judge;

– conversion, to which the liturgy at this time often refers quoting the prophets, especially John the Baptist, ‘Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand’ (Mt 3:2);

– joyful hope that the salvation already accomplished by Christ (cf. Rm 8:24-25) and the reality of grace in the world will mature and reach their fullness, thereby granting us what is promised by faith, and ‘we shall  become like him for we shall see him as he really is’   (Jn 3:2).

As already announced, our 12.00 Noon Mass on Sunday 13th December (Third Sunday of Advent) will be celebrated as a ‘Family Mass’.

Our Family Mass  –  Sunday 13th December 2015 – 12 Noon

Another extract from the National Directory for Catechesis in Ireland

“A group of parents/guardians, trained over time in good liturgy, should act as leaders, stimulating others to organise lectors (readers), procession, liturgical art, special events, after-Mass community gatherings etc. The Family Mass Team, working together with the parish’s other faith development teams, can become a real focus for renewal in the parish.

In the particular cases where children are without religious support at home, have not been baptised or have not completed their journey of initiation, it is the responsibility of the Christian community to address the situation. It can do this, the General Directory for Catechesis suggests ‘by
providing generous, competent and realistic support, seeking dialogue with the families, proposing adequate forms of education and providing catechesis which is proportionate to the concrete possibilities and needs of these children’  (GDC 180 and NDCI 98)

Safeguarding Children
Our New Bishop is keen to continue and develop the procedures and good practice already established re Safeguarding all Children and Vulnerable Adults.

In this Parish our local representatives have already received training in Safeguarding. Their names are on the Parish Newsletter.  Three other persons (two of them members of the Parish Pastoral Council) have recently undergone training.

We would welcome names of persons who would like to volunteer for training. Please give your name and telephone number to Fr. Hegarty or to the Parish local representatives.

Today there are copies of the Diocesan Newsletter 2015 on Safeguarding available in the Sacristy.  Please ask for a copy.

 

Family Mass
As announced last week, we hope to celebrate the 12.00 Noon Mass on Sunday 13th December (Third Sunday of Advent) as a ‘Family Mass’ to which all the families of our Parish are invited. We would like to welcome young and old from babies to grandparents.

In the New Year we hope to make the 12.00 Mass on the First Sunday of each month a Family Mass. All this will take a bit of organising, so we are looking for volunteers.  Please put names and telephone numbers in the box near the altar.

In places, as Share the Good News (The National Directory for Catechesis in Ireland) says; “Family Mass has become a popular form of ministry to families in a parish. In Ireland today … children and young people need to know they belong to their faith community. Young members of the Church need to feel and believe that they have a valuable contribution to make to the local parish community. It is better to celebrate a Family Mass rather than a Children’s Mass. All members of the family have a role to play”.   No. 98 (adapted)
