Advent
Advent is a time of waiting, conversion and of hope:

– waiting-memory of the first, humble coming of the Lord in our mortal flesh; waiting-supplication for his final, glorious coming as Lord of History and Universal Judge;

– conversion, to which the liturgy at this time often refers quoting the prophets, especially John the Baptist, ‘Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand’ (Mt 3:2);

– joyful hope that the salvation already accomplished by Christ (cf. Rm 8:24-25) and the reality of grace in the world will mature and reach their fullness, thereby granting us what is promised by faith, and ‘we shall  become like him for we shall see him as he really is’   (Jn 3:2).

Our Family Mass
As already announced, our 12.00 Noon Mass on Sunday 13th December (Third Sunday of Advent) will be celebrated as a ‘Family Mass’.

We invite all the families of our Parish to be present or to be represented.

Please use the Box on the table near the Altar for suggestions about the Family Mass and for names of those willing to help.

Our Family Mass  –  Sunday 13th December 2015 – 12 Noon

Another extract from the National Directory for Catechesis in Ireland

“A group of parents/guardians, trained over time in good liturgy, should act as leaders, stimulating others to organise lectors (readers), procession, liturgical art, special events, after-Mass community gatherings etc. The Family Mass Team, working together with the parish’s other faith development teams, can become a real focus for renewal in the parish.

In the particular cases where children are without religious support at home, have not been baptised or have not completed their journey of initiation, it is the responsibility of the Christian community to address the situation. It can do this, the General Directory for Catechesis suggests ‘by
providing generous, competent and realistic support, seeking dialogue with the families, proposing adequate forms of education and providing catechesis which is proportionate to the concrete possibilities and needs of these children’  (GDC 180 and NDCI 98)

We need volunteers for the suggested Family Mass Team.   For a start we need a few people to help organise a first attempt at a Family Mass. Please note the Box near the altar for names and suggestions.

Safeguarding Children
Our New Bishop is keen to continue and develop the procedures and good practice already established re Safeguarding all Children and Vulnerable Adults.

In this Parish our local representatives have already received training in Safeguarding. Their names are on the Parish Newsletter.  Three other persons (two of them members of the Parish Pastoral Council) have recently undergone training.

We would welcome names of persons who would like to volunteer for training. Please give your name and telephone number to Fr. Hegarty or to the Parish local representatives.

Today there are copies of the Diocesan Newsletter 2015 on Safeguarding available in the Sacristy.  Please ask for a copy.

Family Mass
As announced last week, we hope to celebrate the 12.00 Noon Mass on Sunday 13th December (Third Sunday of Advent) as a ‘Family Mass’ to which all the families of our Parish are invited. We would like to welcome young and old from babies to grandparents.

In the New Year we hope to make the 12.00 Mass on the First Sunday of each month a Family Mass. All this will take a bit of organising, so we are looking for volunteers.  Please put names and telephone numbers in the box near the altar.

In places, as Share the Good News (The National Directory for Catechesis in Ireland) says; “Family Mass has become a popular form of ministry to families in a parish. In Ireland today … children and young people need to know they belong to their faith community. Young members of the Church need to feel and believe that they have a valuable contribution to make to the local parish community. It is better to celebrate a Family Mass rather than a Children’s Mass. All members of the family have a role to play”.   No. 98 (adapted)

Please ponder the above extract and ask yourself – whether you are young or old – what can I contribute?

The Pope’s Intentions for November
Universal: Dialogue That we may be open to personal encounter and dialogue with all, even those who convictions differ from our own.

Evangelisation: Pastors That pastors of the Church, with profound love for their flocks, may accompany them and enliven their hope.

Outreach to Families

The Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) has been reflecting on how the Parish might reach out more to families. We are hoping to make the 12.00 Noon Mass on Sunday 13th December a special Family Mass (provided there is not a funeral). From now, we invite all families to come to Mass on that date.  Let it be a gathering of young and old.  Volunteers for Readings and Prayers of Faithful etc. are requested.  Please put names and telephone nos. in the box near the altar.

Prayer for Families

God and Father of us all
in Jesus, your Son and our Saviour,
you have made us your sons and daughers
in the family of the Church.

May your grace and love
help our families in every part of the world
be united to one another in fidelity to the Gospel.

May the example of the Holy Family,
with the aid of your Holy Spirit,
guide all families, especially those most troubled,
to be homes of communion and prayer
and to always seek your truth and live in your love.
Through Christ our Lord.  Amen.

All Saints and All Souls
This Sunday we celebrate the Feast of All the Saints. “The ultimate object of Veneration of the Saints is the glory of God and our own sanctification. We try to imitate the virtue of those who were pre-eminent disciples of the Lord”     (Adapted from the Directory of Popular Piety and the Liturgy).

On all Souls Day (2nd November) we honour the memory of our Dead, as has been done from the very earliest days of the Christian religion.

The following prayer from the Order of Christian Funerals will help us to keep both Feasts in mind:

Lord God,
whose days are without end
and whose mercies beyond counting,
keep us mindful
that life is short and the hour of death unknown.
Let your Spirit guide our days on earth
in the ways of holiness and justice,
that we may serve you
in union with the whole Church,
sure in faith, strong in hope, perfect in love.
And when our earthly journey is ended,
lead us rejoicing into your kingdom,
where you live for ever and ever.
Amen.                       OCF, 332

October – The Month of the Rosary

Pope Francis was present one time when Pope John Paul 11 (now St. John Paul) was saying the Rosary.  He has this to say:

“One afternoon I went to pray the Holy Rosary that the Holy Father was leading. He was in front of us on his knees. With the Holy Father’s back to me I entered into prayer. In the middle of the prayer, I became distracted looking at the pope, and time began to fade away.

I began to imagine the young priest, the seminarian, the poet, the worker, the child from Wadowice in exactly the same posture as he was now praying Hail Mary after Hail Mary.  His witness struck me. I felt this man chosen to guide the Church was the summation of a path trod together with his Mother in heaven, a path that began in his childhood.

And I suddenly realised the weight of the words spoken by the Mother of Guadalupe to Saint Juan Diego, “Do not be afraid. Am I not your mother?” I grasped the presence of Mary in the Pope’s life. His witness did not get lost in memory. From that time onward I have prayed the fifteen mysteries of the Rosary every day”.

The Great Reformer: Francis and the Making of a Radical Pope, p. 275)

World Mission Day
Pope Francis in his message for World Mission Day 2015 has this to say:
“Every baptised person is called to bear witness to the Lord Jesus by proclaiming the faith received as a gift. Since Christ’s entire existence had a missionary character, so too, all who follow him closely must possess this missionary quality. As Vatican 11 stated: ‘The laity should cooperate in the Church’s missionary work of evangelisation, as witnesses and at the same time as living instruments, they share in her saving mission’ (Ad Gentes, 41)”. The first to whom the Gospel message must be preached are: “the poor, the little ones and the sick, those who are often looked down upon and forgotten, those who cannot repay us (cf. Luke 14:13-14)”.

The duty of the Church is to help those in need. However, if the purpose of the Church is solely to care for the poor, to further justice and peace, then it becomes a human institution oriented to temporal goals. The primary mission of the Church is to preach the Good News of Jesus Christ so that all people will be brought into communion with the living God and into the fullness of the kingdom. Caring for the poor is an important aspect of the Church’s ultimate mission, that is, to invite “all people, scattered and divided by sin, into the unity of God’s family, the Church… to become, in the Holy Spirit, his adopted children and thus heirs to his blessed life”. (Catechism of the Catholic Church 1)

Universal: Human Trafficking That human trafficking, the modern form of slavery, may be eradicated.

Evangelisation: Mission in Asia That with a missionary spirit the Christian communities of Asia may announce the Gospel to those who are still awaiting it.

Praying for all our Families
In his homily at the concluding Mass for the World Meeting of Families, Pope Francis gave very practical advice:
Happiness, holiness is always tied to little gestures.   These little gestures are those we learn at home in the family; they get lost amid all the other things we do, yet they do make each day different. They are the quiet things done by mothers and grandmothers, by fathers and grandfathers, by children.

They are little signs of tenderness, affection and compassion. Like the warm supper we look forward to at night, the early lunch awaiting someone who
gets up early to go to work. Homely gestures. Like a blessing before we go to bed, or a hug after we return from a hard day’s work.

Love is shown by little things, by attention to small daily signs, which make us feel at home. Faith grows when it is lived and shaped by love. That is why our families, our homes are true domestic churches.   They are the right places for faith to become life and life to become faith.

This weekend in union with all those attending the National Eucharistic Congress at Knock we pray the

Eucharistic Congress Prayer

Lord Jesus, you were sent by the Father
to gather together those who are scattered.
You came among us, doing good and bringing healing,
announcing the word of salvation
and giving the Bread which lasts forever.
Be our companion on life’s pilgrim way.

May your Holy Spirit inflame our hearts,
enliven our hope and open our minds,
so that together with our sisters and brothers in faith
we may recognise you in the Scriptures
and in the breaking of bread.
May your Holy Spirit transform us into one body
and lead us to walk humbly on the earth,
in justice and love,
as witnesses of your resurrection.

In communion with Mary,
whom you gave to us as our Mother
at the foot of the cross, through you
may all praise, honour and blessing be to the Father
in the Holy Spirit and in the Church,
now and forever.  Amen.
