The Exaltation of the Holy Cross  The discovery of the True Cross is dated to 14 September 320. On 13th September 335 the churches on Calvary were dedicated and the cross that St. Helena discovered was venerated there the next day.  The annual commemoration of that event has been celebrated since, in praise of the redemption won for us by Christ.

A Prayer for our Families

(In preparation for the special meeting (synod) on the christian family to be held in Rome next October and also in 2015)

God and Father of us all

in Jesus, you Son and our Saviour,

you have made us

your sons and daughters

in the family of the Church.

May your grace and love

help our families

in every part of the world

be united to one another

in fidelity to the Gospel.

May the example of the Holy Family

with the aid of your Holy Spirit,

guide all families, especially those most troubled

to be homes of communion and prayer

and to always seek your truth and live in your love

through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for us.

The Pope’s Intentions for September

Universal:   That the mentally disabled may receive the love and help they need for a dignified life.

For Evangelisation:  That Christians, inspired by the Word of God, may serve the poor and suffering.

With the Church in heaven and on earth

Let us glorify the Lord:  Praise to You now and evermore!

With the Virgin Mary, your Mother,

We wish to listen to your Word.

With the patriarchs and prophets

We wish to announce your Kingdom.

With the apostles and evangelists

We wish to proclaim the Good News.

With all the disciples who answered your call

We wish to follow you.

With all the martyrs who offered you their bodies in sacrifice

We wish to give witness to you.

With the saints of all times

We wish to serve you.

With all those who believe in you

We offer you the obedience of our faith.

With all those who love you

We offer you our love.

With all those who seek you in the night

We wish to walk toward the light.

With all those who are unaware of your name

We wish to learn to love you.

With all those whom you invite to the banquet of the Kingdom

Invite us also, we beg you.

With all those whom you inscribe in the book of life,

Count us among your elect.

With all those who die in you

We place our hope in your mercy.

With all those who have risen with you

We sing your praises forever.

Lord Jesus,

You answered the Canaanite woman’s request

to cure her daughter.

With her we pray to you:

“Lord, come and help us.

Give us the bread of children!”

Save us, O Lord, because of your love!

Lord Jesus,

God of all tenderness

and of all mercy,

You who spent your time on earth doing good,

we pray to you:

Give to each of us our share of joy and happiness,

so that we can, on our road of life,

discover you love constantly,

bless and glorify you,

and arrive at perfect joy,

which is to live near your Father

with You and the Holy Spirit,

for ever and ever.

Amen!

Assumption

Next Friday 15th August is the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. It is a Holyday of Obligation.  Mass on Thursday evening at 7.30 p.m. and on Friday at 9.00 a.m. and 12.00 Noon.

Lord Jesus, Son of the Virgin Mary,

we praise you and bless you

for having so glorified your Mother

in her soul and body.

If the day of death

is the day of birth into heaven,

your Mother was never so young

as on the morning of her Assumption.

Help us to grow old as she did

while continually becoming younger,

until the day when we will be children enough

to enter the Kingdom.

We ask this of you

in the name of the love you have for your Mother,

who is also our Mother

and the first of all the children of God.

(Lucien Deiss, Biblical Prayers)

The Pope’s Intentions for August

Universal:   That refugees, forced by violence to abandon their homes, may find a generous welcome and the protection of their rights.

For Evangelisation:  That Christians in Oceania may joyfully announce the faith to all the people of that region.

The Eucharist

The Eucharist is not only the memorial of the death and resurection of the Lord, but also a sign and foretaste of the final unity of the Kingdom of God. From celebration to celebration, God’s pilgrim people advances towards the great banquet in heaven, ‘when all the elect will be seated at the table of the kingdom’. It is the Lord of Glory who comes to us in the Eucharist, and we anticipate there ‘the joys of the age to come’.

We celebrate together the communion we already share, but we are also very aware of the imperfection of our unity, even among Catholics gathered to share together the one Bread of Life. We come forward to receive Holy Communion as a foretaste of our future unity as God’s pilgrim people, and our ‘Amen’ should include a real commitment to the fullness of that unity.

It is as well to remember, in the pain, sorrow and frustration of our journey together as fellow Christians, yearning for unity and yet still disunited, that fullness of communion is a gift of God’s grace, and that we will have to ‘wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Saviour, Jesus Christ’.  This does not mean, of course, that we simply sit and wait.  God wills to work through us, and the Eucharist consecrates those who take part in it to be instruments and ambassadors of reconciliaton.

(One Bread One Body n.44)

Prayer for Grandparents

Lord Jesus,

you were born of the Virgin Mary,

the daughter of Saints Joachim and Anne.

Look with love on grandparents the world over.

Protect them! They are a source of enrichment

for families, for the Church and for all of society.

Support them! As they grow older,

may they continue to be for their families

stong pillars of Gospel faith,

guardian of noble domestic ideals,

living treasures of sound religious traditions.

Make them teachers of wisdom and courage,

that they may pass on to future generations the fruits

of their mature human and spiritual experience.

Lord Jesus,

help families and society

to value the presence and roles of grandparents.

May they never be ignored or excluded,

but always encounter respect and love.

Help them to live serenely and to feel welcomed

in all the years of life which you give them.

Mary, Mother of all the living,

keep grandparents constantly in your care,

accompany them on their earthly pilgrimage,

and by your prayers, grant that all families

may one day be reunited in our heavenly homeland,

where you await all humanity

for the great embrace of life without end. Amen!

Pope Emeritus Benedict XV1

Come to me like a Cry of Joy

Come, Lord Jesus Christ!

When my life sinks in sadness,

Come to me like a cry of joy.

Come, Lord Jesus Christ!

When my heart is as hard as a rock,

Come to me like the dew of springtime.

Come, Lord Jesus Christ!

When noise invades my haven,

Come to me like an oasis of silence.

Come, Lord Jesus Christ!

When the wind of hate rises within me,

Come to me like a kiss of pardon.

Come, Lord Jesus Christ!

When I am sinking into the darkness of death,

Come to me like a child’s smile.

Come, Lord Jesus Christ!

And when the earth encloses me in its arms,

Open for me the doors of your mercy.

Come, Lord Jesus Christ!

The Parable of the Sower

Remember us, O Lord, by your loving care!

Jesus taught his disciples with parables.

He said to them, “Listen!

One day a farmer went out sowing…”

So that your Word in us, Lord,

does not fall on the roadside and Satan remove it from our hearts

We pray to you.

So that your Word in us, Lord,

does not fall on rocky ground and we be fickle at our first temptation,

We pray to you.

So that your Word in us, Lord,

does not fall among thorns and the cares of life

and the enticement or riches choke it,

We pray to you.

So that your Word in us, Lord,

falls on rich and fertile soil and we yeild fruit in abundance

We pray to you.

Lord Jesus,

Sower of all the good that is in the world,

place in us the seeds of goodness and justice.

Let our land yield a harvest of brotherly love

and sheaves of joy for eternal life.
