A Reflection for Holy Week
At the beginning of Lent we asked, “Why was Jesus tempted”? Now, at the season’s close we ask, “Why did he suffer”? The early Church knew that he did suffer and die. She also knew that this had to be in accord with God’s plan, or as St Paul calls it, with his mystery.
One hint is found in an enigmatic figure described in the Old Testment. In the second part of the Book of Isaiah (cc.40-55), written during the exile in Babylon, there appears in four distinct poems, one who is called the Servant of Yahweh. In the third, and especially in the fourth, the servant is said to suffer at the hands of others.
The first of this Sunday’s readings is the third of these “Suffering Servant” poems. Monday of this Holy Week will offer the first poem, Tuesday the second, Wednesday the third again, and Good Friday the fourth and climactic one. In the last one the Servant is said to suffer and die for the sins of others. “… He gives his life as an offering for sin”.
It is clear from this liturgical usage that the Church considers Jesus to be the fulfilment of the ancient oracles. They provide the answer, at least partially, to our question. Jesus suffered and died for the sins of humankind. His passion and death become our means of salvation.
