To Testify to your Resurrection
May you be blessed, Lord Jesus,
you who call us to testify to your Resurrection
unto the ends of the earth!
But come to our aid,
so that our testimony may be worthy of you.

You wish us to proclaim that you are Living,
though we ourselves fear death.

You wish us to announce your light,
though we grope in the darkness.

You command us to speak with authority,
though we stutter in ignorance before your mystery.

You wish us to affirm your free gift of mercy for all people.
though we have to beg for it, first of all, for ourselves.

You wish to make us God’s assistants,
though we carry the weight of our own fatigue.

Can anything make so many contradictions work together
as your love alone? …
a love which calls us in spite of our faults,
which gives us confidence in spite of our unfaithfulness!

To you be glory, O wonderful Christ,
with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
forever!      (Lucien Deiss, Biblical Prayers)

This is the Day You have Made for us
Your Resurrection is the Hope of our Own

This is the day you have made for us, risen Lord, a day of happiness and joy!

We pray to you, Lord:
Make each day that you give us the most beautiful day of our lives,
because it is the day you have chosen for us to encounter you.
O risen Christ!

May you be blessed, Lord Jesus, because your Resurrection is the hope of our own, and the glory which will clothe us on the last day is a reflection of that which clothed you on Easter morning.

We pray to you:
Let all our lives express this hope by their constant renewal through the joy
of your love and the service of our brothers.

World Day of Prayer for Vocations
Today, the Fourth Sunday of Easter or Good Shepherd Sunday is a special day for everyone in our parish and our Diocese. We celebrate World Day of Prayer for Vocations.

We ask that we may be filled with joy and the Holy Spirit as we carry on the mission of Jesus, our Good Shepherd. We pray in thanksgiving today for our Bishop, Priests, Religious and Deacons and for an increase in vocations in the Church. May our youth listen to God’s call and be encouraged to respond generously.

Prayer for Vocations
In his Message for this Sunday Pope Francis writes:  “We ask the Lord to grant to those who are on a vocational journey,a deep sense of belonging to the Church, and that the Holy Spirit may strengthen among Pastors, and all of the faithful, a deeper sense of Communion discernment and spiritual fatherhood and motherhood”.

His message ends with this prayer:
Father of mercy, who gave your Son for our salvation and who strengthens us always with the gifts of your Spirit, grant us christian communities which are alive, fervent and joyous, which are parts of fraternal life, and which nurture in the young the desire to consecrate themselves to you and to the work of evangelisation. Sustain those communities in their commitment to offer appropriate vocational catechesis and ways of proceeding towards each one’s particular consecration. Grant the wisdom needed for vocational discernment so that in all things the greatness of your merciful love may shine forth. May Mary, Mother and guide of Jesus, intercede for each christian community, so that, made fruitful by the Holy Spirit, it may be a source of true vocations for the service of the Holy People of God.

The Pope’s Intentions for April
Universal:  Small Farmers   That small farmers may receive a just reward for their precious labour.

Evangelisation: African Christians   That Christians in Africa may give witness to love and faith in Jesus Christ amid political-religious conflicts.

By Your Resurrection

By your resurrection, O Lord,
you became the first-born of the dead.
Help us live the newness of your life.

By your resurrection,
you seal the new covenant.
Place in our hearts your own Spirit.

By your resurrection,
you killed hate among men.
Help us live the new law of your love.

By your resurrection,
you clothed yourself with immortality.
Help us put on the new man
created in justice and holiness of truth.

By your resurrection,
you sit at the right hand of your Father.
Help us discover in the earthly realities
the path to your heavenly kingdom.

By your resurrection,
you restore the universe.
Rebuild also your Church in your joy,
because the life of your risen people
is the witness of your resurrection.

We remember You, O risen Lord,
new Covenant at the feast of the cross.
Your resurrection dresses the table
for the bread of heaven and the cup of salvation.

Proclaiming your Resurrection

Help us, O risen Lord, to proclaim your Resurrection,
by bringing good news to the poor,
and healing the hearts that are broken.

Help us, O risen Lord, to proclaim your Resurrection,
by feeding those who are hungry,
and clothing those who are naked.

Help us, O risen Lord, to proclaim your Resurrection,
by releasing the captives of injustice,
and all those who are imprisoned by their sins.

Help us, O risen Lord, to proclaim your Resurrection,
by welcoming the strangers,
and visiting those in loneliness.

Help us, O risen Lord, to proclaim your Resurrection,
by bringing your peace to those who are in trouble,
and your joy to those who are in sorrow.

God our Father, who raised your Son from the dead,
help us to understand, we beg you,
that we will conquer our own death
and rise with Jesus today
when we live in brotherly love.

We ask you this grace through Jesus Christ,
who died for our sins and rose for our life.
(Lucien Deiss, Biblical Prayers)

St. Patrick’s Day – Thursday 17th March
St. Patrick was born very probably in the early years of the fifth century in the Roman colony of Britain. He was taken captive at the age of sixteen and brought to Ireland where he was sold as a slave. He tended herds on Slemish Mountain for six years. His captivity had a very positive effect on his spiritual life. He prayed many times each day, his faith growing stronger and his love and reverence for God increasing.

He escaped back home at the age of twenty-two. It was obvious to him that God was calling him to return to convert the Irish. The voice of the Irish was calling him to come and walk among them once more. He studied probably in France, returned to Ireland as a Bishop c. 457-61, or as early as 432 according to another tradition.

His mission was not immediately greatly successful but eventually he would make a tremendous number of converts. Two writings survive: the Letter to Coroticus, a protest to the soldiers of a British prince who had killed some converts and sold others as slaves, and his Confession, written near the end of his life, showing him as one living by the faith he preached and allowing Christ to direct his whole life. He died in 491, though again other dates have been suggested, 480 or as early as 461.

Penitential Litany – Gospel of Luke

You come to look for the lost sheep;
joyfully you carry it on your shoulders –
we beg you: O God, be merciful to me, a sinner!

You go to meet the prodigal son;
you clasp him in your arms and kiss him –
we beg you: O God, be merciful to me, a sinner!

You choose as your apostle Matthew the tax-collector:
you have not come to call the righteous, but sinners –
we beg you: O God, be merciful to me, a sinner!

You enter the house of Zachaeus the tax-collector
in order to seek out and save what was lost –
we beg you: O God, be merciful to me, a sinner!

You accept the ointment of the sinful woman;
because of her tears you pardon and defend her –
we beg you: O God, be merciful to me, a sinner!

To the good thief who implores you,
you open the gate to Paradise –
we beg you: O God, be merciful to me, a sinner!
(Lucien Deiss, Biblical Prayers)

The Pope’s Intentions for March
Universal: Families in Difficulty  That families in need may receive the necessary support and that children may grow up in healthy and peaceful environments.

Evangelisation: Persecuted Christians  That those Christians who, on account of their faith, are discriminated against or are being persecuted, may remain strong and faithful to the Gospel, thanks to the incessant prayer of the Church.

You Who Await the Return of the Sinner

Blessed be you, O Lord, O Merciful one – you who await the return of the sinner, you who rejoice over finding the lost sheep, you who embrace the son who returns to his home.

Bestow your mercy on all people, soften the hardness of our hearts, break the pride of our impenitent spirits.

Do not close the door of your house, Lord!  Wait until the last of your children returns.  And only then begin the eternal feast of your mercy!

God of love, you give your people the fond hope that, after sin, you leave room for repentance.

Give each of us the joy of using this time of Lent to return to you with all our hearts as a child returns to his father.
(Lucien Deiss, Biblical Prayers)
