An Advent Prayer

Your Return is Near

“Yes, your return is near!

Oh, yes, come, Lord Jesus”!

Soon I am going to see you, O my God,

and I rejoice for that day.

Not for what I am,

not for what I have,

but just because I am nothing

and my hands are empty before you.

Because I depend on you, Lord,

and I rejoice for that great feastday

when my misery will meet

your mercy.

An Advent Prayer

How Long the Way!  Emmanuel, come, save your people.

How long the path which leads to you!

Lord, come to meet us,

be our way.

How heavy the burden of our misery!

Lord, come to meet us,

be our rest.

How darkly hard the journey to our star!

Lord, come to meet us,

be our sunlight.

How lonely do we wander,

stumbling together in the darkness!

Lord, come to meet us,

be our brother.

How long, Lord Jesus, do we wait for your return!

Yet since you lit hope’s flame within our hearts,

come now at last to be our hope’s fulfillment.

Allow us to dwell near your heart:

there we belong forever and ever.

A Prayer for Advent

O Wisdom – Come, O Lord, come, save your people!

O Wisdom,

issuing from the mouth of the Most High, announced by the prophets:

Come to teach us the way of salvation,

Come, O Lord, come, save your people!

O Lord,

shepherd of the house of Israel who guide your people:

Come to redeem us by the strength of your arm,

Come, O Lord, come, save your people!

O Son of David,

Standard of people and of kings, you whom the world implores:

Come to deliver us, Lord, do not delay,

Come, O Lord, come, save your people!

O Key of David,

and scepter of the house of Israel: you who open so no one can close,

you who close so no one can open:

Come to free those who wait in the darkness,

Come, O Lord, come, save your people!

O Rising Sun,

Splendor of eternal light and sun of justice: Come to give light

to those who are seated in the shadow of death,

Come, O Lord, come, save your people!

O King of nations,

expectation of peoples and cornerstone of the Church:

Come to deliver the man that you have created,

Come, O Lord, come, save your people!

O Emmanuel,

King and hope of nations and Saviour of all people:

Come to free us, Lord, do not delay,

Come, O Lord, come, save your people!

Advent

Let the Day Come, Lord   Come, Lord Jesus, Come!

Let the day come, Lord,

when our misery will find your mercy.

Let the day come, Lord,

when our poverty will find your riches.

Let the day come, Lord,

when our path will find the way to your house.

Let the day come, Lord,

when our tears will find your smile.

Let the day come, Lord,

when our joy will find your heaven.

Let the day come, Lord,

when your Church will find the Kingdom.

May you be blest, Father,

for that day when our eyes will find your face!

Throughout all the time of our life

you have not ceased to come before us

in your Son Jesus Christ,

our Saviour and our brother.

O Lord, we pray to you.  Watch over your Church make it perfect in your love.  O Lord, we pray to you.

Gather all the baptised into the unity of the faith.  O Lord, we pray to you.

Lead all people to the light of the Gospel.  O Lord, we pray to you.

Give to all people peace in justice.  O Lord, we pray to you.

To those who remember the poor give everlasting reward.  O Lord, we pray to you.

Strengthen all our brothers and sisters in the service of  the Kingdom.  O Lord, we pray to you.

Lift our souls toward the desires of heaven.  O Lord, we pray to you.

 The Pope’s Intentions for November

Universal:   That all who suffer loneliness may experience the closeness of God and the support of others.

For Evangelisation:  That young seminarians and religious may have wise and well-formed mentors.

Prayer for the Dead

God of infinite mercy, we entrust to your immense goodness all those who have left this world for eternity, where you await all humanity, redeemed by the precious blood of Christ Your Son, who died to save us from our sins.

Look not Lord, at our poverty, misery and human weaknesses when we present ourselves before you to be judged in happiness or condemned.

Gaze upon us with pity, born of your tender heart and help us to walk the path of purification. May none of your children be lost to the eternal fires of hell, where repentance is no more.

We entrust to you Lord, the souls of our beloved departed, of those who died without the comfort of the Sacraments or who did not have opportunity to repent, not even at the end of their life.

May no one fear the encounter with You at the end of their earthly pilgrimage, in the hope of being welcomed within the embrace of your infinite mercy. May sister death find us in prayerful vigilance, and full of all the good we have done during our existance, be it long or short.

Lord may nothing distance us from you on this earth. May everything and everyone support us in our ardent hope to serenely and eternally rest in you.   Amen.

(Pope Francis on the 2nd November 2014)

Universal Prayer

Composed by Father Joseph Wresinski, October 17, 1987, Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris

For these millions of children twisted by the pain of hunger, no longer able to smile, yet still yearning to love. For these millions of young people, who have no reason to believe or even to exist, and who vainly search for a future in this sensless world.

Our Father we pray to you, Send hands to reap your harvest.

For these millions of men, women and children, whose hearts are still pounding strong to the beat of struggle, whose minds rise in revolt against the unjust fate imposed upon them, whose courage demands the right to priceless dignity.

Our Father we pray to you, Send hands to reap your harvest.

For these millions of children, women and men who do not want to codemn, but to love, to pray, to work and to unite, so that a world of solidarity may be born. A world, our world, in which all people would have given the best of themselves before dying.

Our Father we pray to you, Send hands to reap your harvest.

May all those who pray find a hearing in God’s presence and receive from Him the power to remove misery from humanity, the humanity created in His image.

Our Father we pray to you, Send hands to reap your harvest.

Pope John Paul 11 chose this prayer to open the 1997 Paris World Youth Days.

A Prayer for our Families

Father, grant to all families the presence of strong and

wise spouses who may be the source of a free and united

family.

Father grant that parents may have a home in which to

live in peace with their families.

Father grant that children may be a sign of trust and hope,

and that young people may have the courage to forge

life-long faithful commitments.

Father grant to all that they may be able to earn bread

with their hands, that they may enjoy serenity of spirit

and that they may keep aflame the torch of faith even in

periods of darkness.

Father grant that we may all see flourish a Church that is

ever more faithful and credible. A just and human city,

a world that loves truth, justice and mercy. AMEN.

(Taken from the Message at the end of the recent Synod on the Family)

World Mission Sunday  –  A Prayer

God of truth and love, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, hear our prayer for those who do not know you.

That they may come to a saving knowledge of the truth and that your name may be praised among all the peoples of the world.

Sustain, inspire and enlighten your servants who bring them the Gospel. Bring fresh vigour to wavering faith: sustain our faith when it is still fragile.

Continually renew missionary zeal in ourselves and in the Church; raise up new missionaries who will follow you to the ends of the world.

Make us witnesses to your goodness, full of love, strength and faith for your glory and for the salvation of the entire world.

We make this prayer through Christ Our Lord. Amen.
