The Pope’s Intentions for October
Universal: Human Trafficking That human trafficking, the modern form of slavery, may be eradicated.

Evangelisation: Mission in Asia That with a missionary spirit the Christian communities of Asia may announce the Gospel to those who are still awaiting it.

Praying for all our Families
In his homily at the concluding Mass for the World Meeting of Families, Pope Francis gave very practical advice:
Happiness, holiness is always tied to little gestures.   These little gestures are those we learn at home in the family; they get lost amid all the other things we do, yet they do make each day different. They are the quiet things done by mothers and grandmothers, by fathers and grandfathers, by children.

They are little signs of tenderness, affection and compassion. Like the warm supper we look forward to at night, the early lunch awaiting someone who
gets up early to go to work. Homely gestures. Like a blessing before we go to bed, or a hug after we return from a hard day’s work.

Love is shown by little things, by attention to small daily signs, which make us feel at home. Faith grows when it is lived and shaped by love. That is why our families, our homes are true domestic churches.   They are the right places for faith to become life and life to become faith.

Holy Family of Nazareth, may the approching Synod of Bishops make us more mindful of the sacredness and inviolability of the family, and its beauty in God’s plan.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, graciously hear our prayer.  Amen.

This weekend in union with all those attending the National Eucharistic Congress at Knock we pray the

Eucharistic Congress Prayer

Lord Jesus, you were sent by the Father
to gather together those who are scattered.
You came among us, doing good and bringing healing,
announcing the word of salvation
and giving the Bread which lasts forever.
Be our companion on life’s pilgrim way.

May your Holy Spirit inflame our hearts,
enliven our hope and open our minds,
so that together with our sisters and brothers in faith
we may recognise you in the Scriptures
and in the breaking of bread.
May your Holy Spirit transform us into one body
and lead us to walk humbly on the earth,
in justice and love,
as witnesses of your resurrection.

In communion with Mary,
whom you gave to us as our Mother
at the foot of the cross, through you
may all praise, honour and blessing be to the Father
in the Holy Spirit and in the Church,
now and forever.  Amen.

Education in the Faith

Last weeks Parish Newsletter highlighted the New Catholic Preschool and Primary Religious Curriculum.   But Education in the faith is also the task of Parents and should begin in the child’s earliest years.

The CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH (CCC) says that this “already happens when family members help one another to grow in faith by the witness of a christian life in keeping with the Gospel.  Family catechesis precedes, accompanies and enriches other forms of instruction in the faith.
Parents have the mission of teaching their children to pray and to discover their vocation as children of God” (CCC 2226). Many parents feel that they need more knowledge of their faith.

Our Diocese is promoting the study of the Catechism of the Catholic Church and there is a notice of this in today’s Newletter.

What is the National Eucharistic Congress?
The National Eucharistic Congress will serve both as a spiritual preparation for the fifty-first International Eucharistic Congress 2016 in Cebu next January, and as an opportunity to focus, in the light of our Eucharistic communion, on some of the important pastoral questions in the life of the Church at the present time.

The theme for the National Congress, echoing the theme of IEC2016, is ‘Christ, our Hope’ (Col 1:27). The Congress, which is free of charge, will have a particular focus on marriage and the family as well as the Year of Consecrated Life 2015 and the upcoming Jubilee of Mercy.

Copies of Congress Programme available in the Church.

New Catholic Preschool and Primary Religious Education Curriculum

The New Catholic Preschool and Primary Religious Education Curriculum was launched in this Diocese last Thursday. The Catholic vision of education is rooted in its ‘Christian concept of life centred on Jesus Christ; he is the One who ennobles people, gives meaning to human life, and is the model which the Catholic School offers to its pupils’ (CS 33-37). The Catholic Faith is a body of truth that is to be faithfully handed on through Religious Education and catechesis and this handing on is the Christian mission and duty of parents, clergy, religious, teachers and catechists (cf. LF 40, par1).

Religious education is never simply one subject among many in the Catholic primary school, but the foundation of the entire education process. Catholic primary Religious Education is distinctive because it seeks to encourage and support the Catholic faith commitment of  Catholic students (SGN 39). The National Directory for Catechesis, Share the Good News (2010), outlines principles for Religious Education in the Irish Catholic Church (SGN chapter 2).

The Religious Education curriculum conforms with the Catechism of the Catholic Church and is in accordance with the vision outlined in ‘Share the Good News’, the National Directory for Catechesis in Ireland. The practical application of the curriculum, in the day to day teaching in the classroom, will be implemented through the ‘Grow in Love’ Religious Education Programme.

Let us pray for all our children and for their parents and teachers and for all who will be involved in implementing the new curriculum.

The Pope’s Intentions for September
Universal:  Opportunities for the Young  That opportunities for education and employment may increase for all young people.

Evangelisation:  Catechists  That catechists may give witness by living in a way consistent with the faith they proclaim.

Prayer for Creation
Last Tuesday 1st September was the First World Day of Prayer for Creation. We need to pray always and be reinforced in our commitment to pray for the world we live in.

We can pray with Pope Francis:

All powerful God, you are present in the whole universe
and in the smallest of your creatures.
You embrace with your tenderness all that exists.
Pour out upon us the power of your love,
that we may protect life and beauty.
Fill us with peace, that we may live
as brothers and sisters, harming no one.

O God of the poor,
help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten of this earth,
so precious in your eyes.
Bring healing to our lives,
that we may protect the world and not prey on it,
that we may sow beauty, not pollution and destruction.

Touch the hearts of those who look only for gain
at the expense of the poor and the earth.
Teach us to discover the worth of each thing,
to be filled with awe and contemplation,
to recognise that we are profoundly united
with every creature as we journey towards your infinite light.
We thank you for being with us each day.
Encourage us, we pray, in our struggle
for justice, love and peace.     (Pope Francis, Laudato Sí, No. 246)

Sunday
On Sunday, our participation in the Eucharist has special importance. Sunday, like the Jewish Sabbath, is meant to be a day which heals our relationships with God, with ourselves, with others and with the world. Sunday is the day of the Resurrection, the ‘first day’ of the new creation, whose first fruits are the Lord’s risen humanity, the pledge of the final transfiguration of all created reality. It also proclaims ‘man’s eternal rest in God’.  In this way, Christian spirituality incorporates the value of relaxation and festivity.

We tend to demean contemplative rest as something unproductive and unnecessary, but this is to do away with the very thing which is most important about work: its meaning. We are called to include in our work a dimension of receptivity and gratuity, which is quite different from mere inactivity. Rather, it is another way of working, which forms part of our very essence. It protects human action from becoming empty activism; it also prevents that unfettered greed and sense of isolation which make us seek personal gain to the detriment of all else.

The law of weekly rest forbade work on the seventh day, ‘so that your ox and your donkey may have rest, and the son of your maidservant, and the stranger, may be refreshed’ (Ex 23:12).   Rest opens our eyes to the larger picture and gives us renewed sensitivity to the rights of others. And so the day of rest, centred on the Eucharist, sheds it light on the whole week, and
motivates us to greater concern for nature and the poor.
(Pope Francis, Laudato Sí, No. 237)

Stay with Us, Lord
Stay with us, Lord Jesus Christ!

Stay with us, Lord: behold, evening is coming,
and we still haven’t recognised your face
in each of our brothers and sisters
Stay with us, Lord Jesus Christ!

Stay with us, Lord: behold, evening is coming,
and we still haven’t shared your bread
in thanksgiving with all our brothers and sisters.
Stay with us, Lord Jesus Christ!

Stay with us, Lord: behold, evening is coming,
and we still haven’t recognised your Word
in the words of all our brothers and sisters,
Stay with us, Lord Jesus Christ!

Stay with us, Lord, behold, evening is coming,
and our hearts are still too slow to believe
that you had to die in order to rise again.
Stay with us, Lord Jesus Christ!

Stay with us, Lord, for our night itself becomes day
when you are there! Stay with us, Lord Jesus Christ!
