The Gifts of the Spirit

Let us pray to the Lord Jesus that he place in us the gifts of his Spirit and the power of his love.  Come to us, Spirit of the Lord!

Spirit of wisdom, Spirit of understanding, Spirit of adoration, Come to us, Spirit of the Lord!

Sprit of strength, Spirit of knowledge, Spirit of joy, Come to us, Spirit of the Lord!

Spirit of love, Spirit of peace, Spirit of jubilation, Come to us, Spirit of the Lord!

Spirit of willing service, Spirit of goodness, Spirit of gentleness, Come to us, Spirit of the Lord!

God our Father, source of all love and joy, you who never measure the grace of your Spirit but offer it to every person with the royal genreosity of divine giving, we pray to you:

In giving us the Spirit of your Son, pour into our hearts the fullness of love, so that we are able to love you alone yet preserve all our tenderness for people also, in this unique love, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Ascension

Jesus Christ,  Lord glorified on high, look with love upon your brothers and sisters on earth.

Your ascension is the hope of our future glory, and your presence near your Father announces our own entrance into the eternal dwelling.

We pray to you: Let the desire for heavenly realities not make us neglect our work on earth.

Let our hope for the future inspire in us a respect for the present moment.

Let your ascension into heaven move us to make your glory dwell on earth.

Thus we will be witness to your presence among our brothers and sisters until the end of time.

For Evangelisation: Openness to Mission  That Mary’s intercession may help Christians in secularised cultures be ready to proclaim Jesus.

To Testify to your Resurrection

May you be blessed Lord Jesus, you who call us to testify to your Resurrection unto the ends of the earth!  But come to our aid, so that our testimony may be worthy of you.

You wish us to proclaim that you are Living, though we ourselves fear death.

You wish us to announce your light, though we grope in the darkness.

You command us to speak with authority, though we stutter in ignorance before your mystery.

You wish us to affirm your free gift of mercy for all people, though we have to beg for it, first of all, for ourselves.

You wish to make us God’s assistants, though we carry the weight of our own fatigue.

Can anything make so many contradictions work together as your love alone?…..  a love which calls us in spite of our faults, which gives us confidence in spite of our unfaithfulness!

To you be glory, O wonderful Christ, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, forever!

Bishop Alphonsus writes  Café Theology In an effort to reach out to those who do not darken the door of our churches I am starting off an initiative called ‘Café Theology’. Basically it involves inviting all and sundry to a café, presenting a speaker to speak on some topical faith-related issue and starting a discussion in a relaxed atmosphere.

It will kick off with John Waters, writer, journalist, celebrity! etc who will speak on ‘God and the Constitution’ in the Tapestry Room of the Granville Hotel at 7.30 p.m. on Wednesday May 13th. There is no admission fee but we ask those who come along to buy a cup of coffee and a bun or biscuit which helps the discussion and makes it worthwhile for the hotel. I hope that this will be the start of a series of Café Theology sessions. Please spread the word especially to students, in parish newsletters, papers, your friends, etc.”

An Eastertide Prayer  –  This Is The Day You Made For Us

This is the day you have made for us, risen Lord, a day of happiness and joy!

We pray to you, Lord: Make each day that you give us the most beautiful day of our lives, because it is the day you have chosen for us to encounter you.  O risen Christ!

May you be blessed, Lord Jesus, because your Resurrection is the hope of our own, and the glory which will clothe us on the last day is a reflection of that which clothed you on Easter morning.

We pray to you: Let all our lives express this hope by their constant renewal through the joy of your love and the service of our brothers and sisters.
