Day for Life Prayer

We thank you, Lord,

for the gift of life.

Holy Mary, Mother of Love,

holding in your arms

the fruit of your womb,

graciously look upon our earth and remove from it

all that hardens our hearts and dims our eyes

to the preciousness of human life,

from the moment of conception to natural death.

Through the example of your tenderness

teach us the ways of compassion and love

that we may build up the civilisation of love among us

and a society that is truly worthy of the human person.

Help us to reject all that contributes to a culture of death,

and to work with others of goodwill

in promoting the culture of life.

Bring us ever closer to your Son,

so that we may know the fullness of life that he offers us

and come to know that life more perfectly,

with you, and all the angels and saints,

in the eternal life of Heaven.

Amen.

The Prayer of Pope Francis for the Synod on the Family that begins today

Jesus, Mary and Joseph

in you we contemplate

the spendour of true love,

to you we turn with trust.

Holy Family of Nazareth,

grant that our families too

may be places of communion and prayer,

authentic schools of the Gospel

and small domestic Churches.

Holy Family of Nazareth,

may families never again

experience violence, rejection and division:

may all who have been hurt or scandalised

find ready comfort and healing.

Holy Family of Nazareth,

may the approaching Synod of Bishops

make us once more mindful

of the sacredness and inviolability of the family,

and its beauty in God’s plan.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, graciously hear our prayer.

Amen.

The Exaltation of the Holy Cross  The discovery of the True Cross is dated to 14 September 320. On 13th September 335 the churches on Calvary were dedicated and the cross that St. Helena discovered was venerated there the next day.  The annual commemoration of that event has been celebrated since, in praise of the redemption won for us by Christ.

A Prayer for our Families

(In preparation for the special meeting (synod) on the christian family to be held in Rome next October and also in 2015)

God and Father of us all

in Jesus, you Son and our Saviour,

you have made us

your sons and daughters

in the family of the Church.

May your grace and love

help our families

in every part of the world

be united to one another

in fidelity to the Gospel.

May the example of the Holy Family

with the aid of your Holy Spirit,

guide all families, especially those most troubled

to be homes of communion and prayer

and to always seek your truth and live in your love

through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for us.

Lord Jesus,

You answered the Canaanite woman’s request

to cure her daughter.

With her we pray to you:

“Lord, come and help us.

Give us the bread of children!”

Save us, O Lord, because of your love!

Lord Jesus,

God of all tenderness

and of all mercy,

You who spent your time on earth doing good,

we pray to you:

Give to each of us our share of joy and happiness,

so that we can, on our road of life,

discover you love constantly,

bless and glorify you,

and arrive at perfect joy,

which is to live near your Father

with You and the Holy Spirit,

for ever and ever.

Amen!

Assumption

Next Friday 15th August is the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. It is a Holyday of Obligation.  Mass on Thursday evening at 7.30 p.m. and on Friday at 9.00 a.m. and 12.00 Noon.

Lord Jesus, Son of the Virgin Mary,

we praise you and bless you

for having so glorified your Mother

in her soul and body.

If the day of death

is the day of birth into heaven,

your Mother was never so young

as on the morning of her Assumption.

Help us to grow old as she did

while continually becoming younger,

until the day when we will be children enough

to enter the Kingdom.

We ask this of you

in the name of the love you have for your Mother,

who is also our Mother

and the first of all the children of God.

(Lucien Deiss, Biblical Prayers)

The Pope’s Intentions for August

Universal:   That refugees, forced by violence to abandon their homes, may find a generous welcome and the protection of their rights.

For Evangelisation:  That Christians in Oceania may joyfully announce the faith to all the people of that region.

The Eucharist

The Eucharist is not only the memorial of the death and resurection of the Lord, but also a sign and foretaste of the final unity of the Kingdom of God. From celebration to celebration, God’s pilgrim people advances towards the great banquet in heaven, ‘when all the elect will be seated at the table of the kingdom’. It is the Lord of Glory who comes to us in the Eucharist, and we anticipate there ‘the joys of the age to come’.

We celebrate together the communion we already share, but we are also very aware of the imperfection of our unity, even among Catholics gathered to share together the one Bread of Life. We come forward to receive Holy Communion as a foretaste of our future unity as God’s pilgrim people, and our ‘Amen’ should include a real commitment to the fullness of that unity.

It is as well to remember, in the pain, sorrow and frustration of our journey together as fellow Christians, yearning for unity and yet still disunited, that fullness of communion is a gift of God’s grace, and that we will have to ‘wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Saviour, Jesus Christ’.  This does not mean, of course, that we simply sit and wait.  God wills to work through us, and the Eucharist consecrates those who take part in it to be instruments and ambassadors of reconciliaton.

(One Bread One Body n.44)
